The spiritual center of Liébana
Just 3 km from Potes, on the slope of Mount Viorna, is theMonastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana.
Along with Rome, Jerusalem, Santiago de Compostela and Caravaca, it is one of the holy places of Christianity with the privilege of a perpetual Jubilee Year (when April 16 falls on a Sunday).
The reason for the global importance of this site. Here the largest preserved piece of the Cross of Christ (Left Arm) is kept.
- The Relic:It is kept in a spectacular baroque chapel inside the Gothic church.
- Worship:You can kiss (or worship) every day.
The monk Beato, author of the "Comments on the Apocalypse", lived here in the 8th century.
His illuminated manuscripts (Los Beatos) are masterpieces of medieval European art and were born in this place.
