Storybook villages in the Picos

Liébana is dotted with dozens of villages, but some have a special charm. Whether for its architectural conservation, its impossible location or its views, These are the towns that justify the trip in themselves.

1. The undisputed "top"

They are the most famous and rightly so. They have services and are very well cared for.

Pots

The capital and nerve center. Its bridges, the Torre del Infantado and the cobbled streets of La Solana are a must-see.See Potes guide.

Mogrovejo

Heidi's movie setting. Declared a Historic Site thanks to its medieval tower and mansions. It has the Picos de Europa in the perfect background.See Mogrovejo guide.

Dobres and Cucayo

At the end of the valley, after passing the tunnels excavated in rock. It is pure and simple mountain architecture surrounded by wild nature.See Dobres guide.

2. Unknown (and quiet) jewels

To escape from people and enjoy the silence.

  • Tudes:(Vega de Liébana) Cantabria Town Award 2010. Intimate, stone and beautiful.
  • Ledants:Famous for its old Pisa (batanes) and its riverside location.
  • Caloca:On the southern edge, very rural, end of the road and starting point to Peña Labra.

3. Viewpoint towns

Located high up, they offer brutal panoramic views.

  • Cahecho:The viewpoint par excellence. You can see the entire valley and the Peaks in front.
  • Luriezo:Near Cahecho, same spectacular views but with fewer people.
  • Cabañes:At the foot of the Eastern Massif, with views of the gorge and ancient chestnut trees.

4. How to organize the route

The ideal is to dedicate one day to each area of the valley:

  • Day 1:Camaleño Valley (Mogrovejo + Espinama).
  • Day 2:Cereceda Valley (Vega de Liébana: Dobres, Cucayo, Tudes).
  • Day 3:Cillorigo and Cabezón (Lebeña, Piasca, Cahecho).
